Despite a proliferation of organizational forms that challenge the hierarchical, unity-of-command characteristics of organizations, leadership research still today takes the centrality of the line managers in employee-manager relations as given. Here, we study the interplay of leadership behavior and organizational structure on three job quality outcomes: Skill development, work intensity and job satisfaction. The present study is, to our knowledge, the first study of how variation in organizational structure (line vs matrix) interacts with leadership behaviors to explain employee job quality outcomes.
