The main focus of this study is to analyse NRK and TV 2’s motives for owning the rights to distribute digital terrestrial television (DTT) in Norway. We will identify motives based on the politics of media and economy. Media politics stress the public service broadcasting and what is employed as part of this role. The economic motives are based on two different directions. First leadership, the power of the leader, and second the profit incentive, based on ownership. In defining profit possibilities we employ the theory of vertical relations and find that integration possibly can increase the profits by eliminating externalities. Even though pricing in the television market is complex, there might be potential in capturing income from interactive television. It is difficult to reach a definite conclusion, but there is no doubt that both NRK and TV 2 are strengthening their position in the Norwegian media market, and that they might want to transfer the power obtained from the position as a producer to the level of distribution.
