The aim of this review article is to give an overview over some of the literature on so-called market based management in fisheries. Market-based management is, however, a term that has been used with different meanings by various authors. First the main objectives of, and approaches to, fisheries management are discussed. Based on this discussion the review of the literature is divided in two categories, namely incentive-based management and traditional command-and control management. The list of papers that is being reviewed here is by no means exhaustive but rather focusing on some of the aspects of market-based management. Emphasis is put on various forms for rights-based management and on management based on feedback control laws.
