Who Governs the Media? Boards of directors in the Schibsted Media Conglomerate Schibsted is the largest Norwegian media conglomerate. The paper examines the composition of the board of directors of the mother company, Schibsted ASA, and some of the media companies owned by Schibsted ASA. Schibsted ASA has one major, personal owner, Tinius Nagell-Erichsen, who holds 26 percent of the shares. The rest of the shares are owned by Norwegian and foreign financial institutions. Nagell-Erichsen is a board member. The interests of the other owners are represented by «professional» board members. The paper also discusses the composition of the boards of six media companies in the «Schibsted sphere», companies controlled, or partly controlled, by Schibsted, or – in one case – owned indirectly by Schibsted. In all cases, the interests of Schibsted are represented by directors from Schibsted ASA or its daughter companies. The media have a journalistic or creative aspect, as well as an economic, administrative aspect. The boards only possess administrative and economic competence.
