The relationship between the Royal Navy and Hordalands Martime cluster

This report is concerned with understanding the interplay between Norway’s Royal Navy base in Bergen and the civil maritime industry cluster within this region. This study was launched as a result of plans to relocate and downscale the logistics division for the armed forces that have been situated at Haakonsvern base. It is against this background and in line with organisational theory and economic geography literature, that we have investigated the process and implications in some detail.

The empirical evidence combines data from official statistics, data and interview with navy officers as well as interviews with private companies delivering products and services to the naval base. The initiative for the report came from Hordaland County, Bergen Municipality and Bergen Chamber of Commerce.
